i am very happy that obama won. very. and it's not even my country. but the impact to our country is great...

i'm happy that i can look at our southern neighbors with something other than disgust and head shaking. the american people spoke out for change.....and it was heard.
even if obama stumbles and makes mistakes...that really isn't important. it's what the people did that is the change itself. his being elected makes history on so many wonderful levels.

but....i am sad/angry/disappointed because i am canadian and i voted in our recent election.
and we need change here too. and i was disappointed (not surprised at all though).
mostly disappointed by the lack of voter turnout in our recent election. yup...we had one recently too.

especially because i suspect so many of the canadians who are now so happy, and were so interested in the election of the american president (many of whom probably watched the election with more interest than they have ever paid to our canadian elections)...didn't vote this past canadian election.

i am not an american. i am a canadian. and even though i am not happy with our current government...i believe we can also be great. canadians have become lazy. we grow up being told that canada is wonderful, and somehow it seems that we feel we don't need to work at it.
mind you...our choices of leader aren't spectacular..but we have choices.

we are too passive. i have heard too many people say 'my vote doesn't matter' 'what's one less vote?' 'it doesn't matter anyway'

we should take a look at what the u.s just did and realize that there is such a thing as democracy. and even if you feel you are in the minority and there is no point trying...there is. there always is.

i'm not an overly political person. quite the opposite actually. but i know what issues are important to me. and i look at where the candidates stand on them. and i vote.

i vote with the hope that one day i won't cringe when i hear our prime minister's name.

we don't need a superstar candidate to sweep us off our feet to make change.

and yes i am aware that many/most of the people reading this did vote...

and don't get me wrong....i keep getting teary at the stories and posts and speeches about obama winning. and am retardedly happy that the people elected him.
one more thing...

dear obama,

you totally had me right up until the last few sentences of your speech.

'thank you. god bless you. and god bless the united states of america'

ya that one thing that will always let me down....the lack of separation between church and state
i understand you believe in god, sure..whatever...but you are the president elect now. ending your presidential acceptance speech with it....booooo
