David Onley Appointed Next Lt.-Gov. Of Ontario
Tuesday July 10, 2007
For years CityNews viewers have known David Onley as a reporter and TV host who most recently went by the title of Science and Technology Specialist, but soon he'll go by an entirely different title: Your Honour.
Onley has been named Ontario's next Lieutenant Governor, replacing James Bartleman who leaves office on July 31 after a four-year term.
"There are so many thoughts," Onley told CP24's Ann Rohmer as he broke the news of his appointment. "I guess the bottom line is it's an amazing province. It's an opportunity that you don't actively campaign for. It's something that is bestowed upon you. I just found it a distinct privilege and a distinct blessing to have been given this vote of confidence by the Prime Minister."
The veteran journalist recalled the surprise phone call he received from Prime Minister Stephen Harper last week, which came on the drive home from work.
"I just had reached the top of the Don Valley Parkway trying to get home and there was no place to pull over," he said. "And when the prime minister of your country calls, all you can try to do is stay in the same lane, avoid any fender-benders and have a meaningful conversation, which I did."
Officially, the lieutenant governor's job is to represent the Queen in the province, but Onley said there's much more to the position than that, including representing causes like disabled accessibility. That's an issue near and dear to the reporter's heart - he's actively involved with the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons and in 2005 was appointed to chair Ontario's Accessibility Standards Advisory Council.
Onley becomes the 28th Lt.-Gov. of Ontario.
